| The
Mangroves |
| The mangrove
has a forest form in Sinai. The mangrove channel in the Ras
Muhamad National Park, the protected area at the mouth of Umm
Adawi Valley and tidal wooded areas in the Gulf of Aqaba
constitute the northernmost occurrence of these tropical plants in the
world. The main species of the Red Sea is the evergreen
white mangrove, a plant of shallow tidal zone. Specialized cells in
roots and leaves are capable of secreting salt crystals. The mangrove
biotope is a self-sustaining habitat rich in nutrients that supports a
distinct salt-water community. This provides a home for a variety of
marine wildlife and algal flora. |

| Beds of sea
grasses may be found in lagoons or on sediments before the mouths of
valleys. The Red Sea harbours seven species of phaneragamous grasses
belonging mainly to three families. |
